Hobbies

As summer is drawing to an end, I have been thinking a lot about hobbies and how important they have been to me these last few months.

There are times in our lives when we can't control what we do. This happens for many at work. They have to punch that clock 9-5, Monday through Friday and don't get to decide where they are or what they do during that time. They also can't control what their work environment looks like.

Ah, but that's the beauty of hobbies. Hobbies are about what "floats your boat". They are as diverse as we are, but share a common thread: they reduce stress.

Hobbies can be about expression and creativity. Art is a very popular category of hobbies. Doing something artsy can be also be functional, if you use your art to decorate your surroundings.

Hobbies can also just be about entertainment. Sitting back passively and watching something wonderful happen.

My favorite hobbies are doing things for no reason at all except to enjoy the ride. Taking a walk, sitting outside, reading or listening to music. These are all enjoyable hobbies that require no special talent.

Whatever you like, please take some time out this fall to enjoy yourself. Consider decorating your office. These are toxic, stressful times we are living. Hobbies are a great way to return to your nontoxic life.
