September 11

Today is a sad, sad day. It's the day when we, as a nation and as a people have to remember the worst thing that has ever happened to this country in our lifetime. It's a day of tears and heartache that just won't seem to go away-even after 6 years.

If we have learned anything from this tragedy, it should be that our lives are not totally in our control. At least not all the time. But we start off today much the same way we did in 2001. It's chilling to realize how much hasn't changed.

As a nation, we are still trying to protect ourselves, defend ourselves and the process has been frustratingly slow. As people, we have given ourselves permission to go on. We have lived our lives, changed our lives and reevaluated our lives. We have laughed, and even forgotten about the Twin Towers, if even temporarily. We may have moved past the intense fear, but we are still mourning and even angry.

It's like we are stuck in a time warp bringing us back to September 11, 2001 every year.

I think it's time to stop trying for "business as usual" on this Anniversary. We should make the very best of the parts of our lives we can control. I propose this day become a Holiday of Honor. We should face all the feelings and memories this day brings. This day should be a gift of time we give ourselves.
