garbage day

Today is "garbage day" in my community. People throw out things, usually furniture and other larger items, for anyone to come and pick up, for free.

This is really popular in our area and the surrounding towns. People come looking for something useful and take what they want. The folks who put out stuff win, too. They don't have to pay for trash pickup on these items.

Last, but not least, the planet wins biggest of all. For every (large) item that gets reused by someone new, a space stays open in a landfill.

It's a beautiful thing that even with the economy, the war and the swine flu, we can still get together and do something so positive.

And so it is.
